Large-Format Kitchen Floor in Vinings
About This Project
This Vinings kitchen received a full floor replacement using a large-format gray stone-look porcelain tile in a 24x48 format. The existing floor was a combination of older vinyl and a deteriorated plywood subfloor layer that had absorbed moisture over time near the dishwasher area.
Before setting tile, we removed the vinyl and damaged plywood, sistered the affected joists, and installed a fresh layer of cement backer board. The large tile format required the floor to be flat to within 1/8 inch over 10 feet, so we used a self-leveling compound in the low areas before backer board went down. The result is a floor with minimal grout lines that reads as nearly continuous stone across the entire kitchen.
This home sits in one of the established Vinings neighborhoods off Paces Ferry Road, where the wood-framed construction is common and substrate prep is always part of the job.
What We Did
- Removed existing vinyl and assessed subfloor condition; replaced damaged plywood sections
- Applied self-leveling underlayment to bring floor within flatness tolerance
- Installed cement backer board with offset joints, screwed on 6-inch grid
- Set 24x48 porcelain with large-format modified thin-set, back-buttering each tile
